UIST is a higher education institution dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders for the digital 21st century. We utilize a student-centric, problem-based learning approach with continuous updates to our curriculum based on rapid evolution in information technology research, practice and applications.
Our students are highly creative and, as an integral part of their education, work on real-world problems received from government and non-government agencies, cultural heritage organizations, etc.
UIST research and education is motivated by the fact that human enterprises are increasingly fueled by and dependent upon vast flows of information. Information systems are all around us. Cell phones, smart cards, embedded micro-chips, nano-scale sensing devices are ubiquitous and invisible computers have become embedded in everything from appliances to automobiles. Information technology enables world-wide connectivity using social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, YouTube and Twitter, creating opportunities for people throughout the world to be connected in dynamic social networks. The same technology also enables identify theft, anonymous cyber-bullying and coordination of criminal and terrorist activities.
Our University is in the top five Universities in the Republic of Macedonia, according to the ranking list prepared by the center for world-class universities in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a leading global institution for ranking higher education institutions.
The University “St. Paul the Apostle” from the very beginning of its existence has established itself as a leading educational institution which combines both the best research and teaching models from the USA, Europe and the region, and is consistent with the Bologna European Credit Transfer System. The teaching and research staff comprised of top domestic and international experts, who come from over 20 different countries around the world, and the presence of several generations of international students with a scholarship from the Government of the Republic of Macedonia highlight the international character of the University, which is well known not only in the region but around the world as well.Yet, we should mention that our relation to the global academic tradition is not a passive acceptance of ideas. Worldwide trends in the academic work take up a specific model as a result of different assumptions about their role in Macedonia. We choose the one that will be suitable to the current historical needs of our university as part of the modern world.It is no coincidence that the University “St. Paul the Apostle” is located in the beautiful and ancient Ohrid. The active critical communication with our tradition will ensure us an earnest place in the current global academic endeavors. Bearing in mind our tradition, which is a crossroad of different cultures and scientific thoughts, we grow into true heirs of the universal message of the Holy Apostle Paul and his cosmopolitan mission, that through St. Erasmus and the University of St. Clement, the first university in Europe, we carry on and nurture to this day.
